First the houses of Parliament and now Durham Castle. It’s not Guy Fawkes or invading Northern armies taking down Britain’s iconic landmarks.. it is our old enemy Damp.
Durham castle is not only recognised as one of the North Easts most historic and unique attractions but as one of Britain’s overall. Awarded the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 providing international recognition for its historic and unique beauty, Durham University are now fighting to keep the presence of the 1000 year old monument in the heart of its town.
Proposals were submitted by Durham University for the Norman Chapel at Durham castle in early December and are now very near to being implemented. The plans propose excavations in order to expose the walls of the chapel and five exploratory boreholes to be drilled in attempt to eliminate the damp.
Trevor Armour, director of estates and buildings at Durham University stated:
“As part of the maintenance of this historic building, the University plans to excavate around the external wall to allow it to dry out. “The intention is to eventually construct a retaining wall to permanently eradicate the dampness problem.”
It seems the invasion of damp across our country is becoming an increasingly common problem to not only our households but to our beloved iconic monuments as well. There are many different kinds of damp and each can need a different approach.
